Pain & Glory (15)

Director Pedro Almodóvar. Spanish Drama with English sub-titles

Spanish auteur Pedro Almodóvar’s (All About My Mother, Talk to Her, Volver, Julieta) 21st feature film Pain and Glory stars Antonio Banderas and Penélope Cruz. A nostalgic, semi-autobiographical tale, it follows Salvador Mallo (Banderas), a film director in decline as he explores a series of experiences and encounters from his past. Facing his mortality, he recalls his childhood in ‘60s Valencia, his first love affair in ‘80s Madrid, the pain of heartbreak and his fateful early discovery of cinema. A typically witty, sensuous, evocative and intelligent film, it is intensely personal and seems to show its writer-director coming to terms with the scale and depth of his body of work. Beautifully produced, it is rich with subtle pleasures, not least its stellar wider cast including Asier Etxeandia, Leonardo Sbaraglia, Nora Navas and Julieta Serrano alongside Banderas and Cruz.

Flicks Advisor (comments from our film promoters)

Very well crafted film. Likeable characters so you were willing to forgive them their faults. Reflective and contemplative film, which made you think about it afterwards. Lots of discussion after the film ended.
