Glyndebourne Festival 2013
Ariadne auf Naxos
The 2013 Glyndebourne Festival opens with a new production of this compelling and intricately crafted collaboration between composer Richard Strauss and writer Hugo von Hofmannsthal. After the enormous success of Der Rosenkavalier, the two men conceived the idea of a light entertainment, a small trifle to amuse and divert the public. 2 h 45 mins

Hippolyte and Aricie
When Rameau died in 1764, the Mercure de France concluded its obituary with the words “Here lies the God of Harmony.” In many ways he defined 18th-century French music, publishing his widely influential Treaty on Harmony in 1722. Hippolyte et Aricie was Rameau’s first work for the stage, written when he was nearly 50. It is also Glyndebourne’s first production of an opera by Rameau, and will strike audiences, as it did in Paris in 1733, with its richness of invention. 3 h 45 mins

Glyndebourne Festival 2013
Don Pasquale
Donizetti was an enormously prolific composer. Don Pasquale is the 64th of his 66 operas, and was written only a year before the onset of the syphilis-induced dementia that was eventually to overwhelm him. Given the circumstances, it is hardly surprising that the diamond-bright wit and brilliance of this opera also has a distinctly dark side. Danielle de Niese, who is acknowledged as one of the world’s most talented and charismatic artists and has been described as “the world’s coolest soprano” by the New York Times, performs the role of Norina. 2 h 45 mins

The Royal Opera House live
Gloriana
The Royal Opera live from The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden
GLORIANA by Benjamin Britten
Britten’s portrait of the public and private faces of Elizabeth I is a brilliant depiction of the Tudor court and the tension between affairs of state and affairs of the heart. Focusing on Elizabeth’s relationship with the young Earl of Essex, Gloriana captures the dichotomy between the public image of the Virgin Queen and her seething personal feelings – a familiar dichotomy in these days of celebrity-worship and
media scrutiny. Orchestra of the Royal Opera House: Conductor Paul Daniel
